CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Last Saturday, Cherokee County held a half-marathon that looked just like any other... except for the enormous surprise that took place right before it.

Sgt. 1st Class Scott McElroy used the event as a chance to surprise his two kids with his return from
...more overseas.

"I've missed birthdays, missed ball games," Sgt. McElroy said. "[My kids] just keep you driving on."

Sgt. McElroy went straight from high school to the Navy and then the Georgia National Guard. He has served in Venezuela, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Iraq.

But with every trip, he has an increasingly difficult time being away from his two children, teenager Halee and 9-year-old Sam.

"It's never easy going away for that period of time," Sgt. McElroy said. "My two children, they're at very pivotal times in their lives right now, and they're at that time when they really need their dad at home."

But last year their dad had to go away again, this

ATLANTA -- Two local canoers have gotten close to qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team, and they're continuing a family tradition in the process.

Nowadays, Eric Hurd of Woodstock and Jeff Larimer of Marietta are Olympic hopefuls, a paddling duo in the whitewater slalom
...more canoe.

But when they were younger, they learned to paddle along the Chattahoochee River, under the tutelage of two one-time teammates: their fathers.

"The coolest part of it for me is seeing everything come full circle," Mike Hurd said.

The international success of the two sons began with the camaraderie of the two fathers, Mike Hurd and Mike Larimer.

Technically, you could say it began with a movie.

"I got into whitewater after watching the movie Deliverance," Mike Hurd said.

That movie, of course, was filmed in North Georgia. It made Mike Hurd want to canoe; not long after, Hurd met future U.S. teammate Mike Larimer.

CUMMING, Ga. -- The number of kids with autism in Georgia's schools is rising so quickly, educators are trying to find ways to deal with it.

It's not just the students with autism they worry about, but the perceptions of the other students who go to school with them.

A new
...more film is trying to change how teenagers, in particular, look at kids with autism. It debuted last October at the ReelAbilities ALT Disabilities Film Festival.

The film's message is powerful not only because teens with autism speak candidly on camera about their disorder, but because teenagers produced the documentary at a level they knew their peers would understand.

The film begins with a young man standing in the middle of the hallway as dozens of teens pass by him and don't acknowledge him.

"Every day you walk down the hall not really thinking about anything in particular," stated the film's narrator. " And, you don't realize the student walking next to you is
