ATLANTA -- A 77-year-old College Park grandmother is about to get rolling in her brand new Georgia Lottery prize.
Hattie Gaston won a 2012 Cadillac SRX Crossover playing the instant game Cadillac Riches. She claimed her prize Monday at Heritage Cadillac in Morrow.
"I love everything
...more about it," she said of her new car. "It is so sharp, and it just tells you everything."
Gaston purchased her winning ticket at Quick Save Food Mart on Cleveland Avenue in East Point. The grandmother of five says she plans to use her prize to travel with husband Henry.
"I'll probably take a trip to my hometown in Alabama, and I'll drive it on Sundays," she said.
Gaston joins Agape Shacor of Austell, Patricia Wooten of Alma and Hans Deneergaard of Gainesville in winning the Cadillac Riches instant game. Another player, Sandra Carpenter of Smyrna, won a brand new Jeep by playing the Jeep Outdoor Adventure instant game.

EAST POINT, Ga. -- The first-ever Fulton County Principal of the Year honor has been bestowed upon Dan Sims of Tri-Cities High School.
Sims was chosen from nearly 100 principals for the title and says he is humbled by it.

An East Point native, Sims began his academic career as a math teacher. He has worked at Tri-Cities High and Paul D. West Middle School as both a teacher and an administrator. He holds B.S. and M.Ed. degrees from Georgia State University and is currently working on his doctoral degree. Sims is also a proud cancer survivor.

"I was saying if you all don't hurry up I'm going to jump in there myself," mother Tpring Brown said she told the dispatcher.

But when the East Point Fire Department arrived and lifted the drain's cover, the opening was too small for a normal sized person to fit through.  They called in their compact rescue specialist, 4 foot eleven inch firefighter Rosa Tullis.

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Police and homicide investigators are on the scene of a triple shooting in southeast Atlanta. 

The shooting occurred Tuesday night on Gould Street, near Jonesboro Road. 

According to police, one of the victims is in critical condition and police don't know the cause of the shooting.

EAST POINT, Ga. -- A man in his 30s was struck by a car late Wednesday when he stepped off a MARTA bus and walked into oncoming traffic.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. at Washington Road and Lakemont Drive in East Point.

...more involved did not leave the scene and the driver did not appear to be impaired.

The victim, who carried no identification, suffered broken legs, a broken arm and a head injury. He was conscious but not responsive at the scene and was transported to Grady Hospital in critical condition.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident. Police have not yet said if charges will be filed in the case.

ATLANTA -- The man charged with hitting and killing HERO worker Spencer Pass has accepted a plea deal that gets him out of additional jail time.

Kirk Sherwood entered a no contest plea Monday for second degree vehicular homicide and violating the Move-Over Law, which was renamed

Pass was helping a stranded motorist on Interstate 85 near Cleveland Avenue, when he was fatally hit by a pickup driver towing a trailer in late January 2011.

The dental office held its third annual Free Dental Day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.

ATLANTA -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate declined to nine percent in February.
The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the preliminary unemployment rate is down one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 9.1 percent in January.
In Fulton County, the jobless rate

Statewide, Georgia's February seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined for the seventh consecutive month to 9.1 percent -- the lowest rate since March of 2009, when it was also 9.1 percent.
Metro Dalton had the state's highest area unemployment rate at 12.3 percent. Metro Athens had the lowest area rate at seven percent.

We are going to meet at Adair Park II in the parking lot at Gillette and Tift Avenues at 8:30am for breakfast. We will split up into groups with captains and head to the assigned areas. We will have two vehicles with trailers designated for trash and tire pickup to bring everything back to the parking lot.
We plan on cleaning the entire historic district from Shelton to Lexington, Allene and Murphy to Metropolitan.
The City of Atlanta is providing a dumpster for our use. We hope to have 20-25 neighbors along with some volunteers, all we are asking people to bring are gloves and sunscreen.

EAST POINT, Ga. (AP) - The East Point City Council had rejected a proposal to cut utility rates, the latest development in a political battle that led to heated arguments and a heavy police presence at public meetings in recent weeks.

Utility costs have doubled for residents this year compared to 2011. Mayor Earnestine Pittman's proposal to cut utility costs and raise property taxes to offset that cost has sparked controversy.

At one recent meeting, police restrained at least one man and shouting erupted among several others during a heated discussion of the matter.

East Point is trying to cover a projected $7 million budget deficit in the city's general fund.
