ATLANTA -- The new "flex" lane on southbound Georgia 400 debuted this week to mixed reviews. The Georgia Department of Transportation hopes it will ultimately ease congestion on one of the busiest stretches of road in the state. But some drivers complain that so far it's only made their
...more commute worse.

GDOT say it's a little early to judge the success of the new flex lane.

The emergency lanes were opened going southbound only from Holcomb Bridge Road to the North Springs MARTA station.

They opened up to rush hour drivers starting on Monday. They're designed to ease congestion on the highway and the roads feeding into it.

So far the reaction from drivers has been mixed with, equal parts, anger and satisfaction. The DOT said the congestion around the lanes will start to ease up as drivers learn how to use them. But if these lanes are eventually deemed a success, could they be implemented on other roads?

ATLANTA -- Apparently, the new mode of cutting down on traffic congestion being used by the Department of Transportation looks to be a success.

After the first day of allowing commuters to utilize the southbound GA 400 emergency
...more shoulder lane for regular traffic, DOT officials are pleased with the results. Officials surmise that they'll need to pay attention to the Northridge Road exit due to extra congestion, in that area.

However, during the Tuesday morning commute the DOT will use electronic message boards to make sure everyone is clear of the flow of traffic.

"Motorists are definitely adapting to it -- a lot of people were anxious to use it, according to Jill Goldberg, spokeswomen for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The lane is only available from 6:30 until 9:30 a.m. for southbound traffic.

ATLANTA -- GA 400 commuters are getting a bit of a break, at least on a five-and-a-half-mile stretch.

PHOTOS | Riding along GA 400 shoulder

As of 6:30 a.m. Monday, southbound drivers are able to use the right shoulder lane from Holcomb Bridge Road down to the North Springs
...more MARTA Station exit as an extra travel lane.

Georgia DOT workers were still putting up new signs on Tuesday, some taped over, to advertise the new lane and the fact that it will only be legal from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The DOT has had plans for just such an extra lane for years, but Commissioner Keith Golden said they never became reality until Nathan Deal became governor.

The former Georgia congressman mentioned that he had seen shoulder and emergency lanes used during rush hour around Washington, D.C. years ago.

Now Georgia's DOT will experiment with them along this southbound stretch of GA 400 until next fall.

ATLANTA -- A new study by Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger-relief organiztion, shows 16.9 percent of people in metro Atlanta and North Georgia don't always know where they'll find their next meal.

The numbers are even higher in DeKalb County (20.9 percent), Fulton County

"Fulton and DeKalb did go up a little bit but certainly not in the increases we've seen in the past," said Bill Bolling, CEO and founder of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. ACFB is part of the Feeding America network.

Bolling said the ACFB is beginning to see signs of an economic recovery.

"We've had two years of 30 percent increases here at the Food Bank in distribution," Bolling said. "This year, we're running nine or 10 percent, so that's a good thing. Though we're still increasing."

Bolling is worried about what's to come, since demand for food goes up during the summer months.
